A workshop was orginezes by the School of communications on the theme:Workshop on Effective Communication & Personality Development for the 1st BSc (Hons) Mass Communication Students 2024 – 27 Batch students on 24.09.2024, Tuesday at 9.30 AM to 4.15 PM in CR-13, School of Communications,3rd floor, Course Facilitator: Dr. Srimoy Patra, seasoned soft skills trainer and academic.
Objectives:
To help the students enhance their communication skills as well as learn how to make their ideas comprehensible to others along with expressing themselves clearly which will lead to a holistic development.
The day began with an introduction to Dr. Srimoy Patra who managed to bring joy to the session by starting with dividing students in groups and making us play a fun game. The initial session involved him guiding the students on the different types of communication which included verbal, non-verbal and para-verbal communication. Dr Srimoy Patra highlighted on the importance of interpreting gestures and body language which will enable them to understand their audience or interviewer better. He also emphasized on the importance of a good posture while attending any formal meeting or interview which will immediately make a good impression on others.
In the following sessions he explained how rapport building, appearance, etiquettes, tone of the speaker, their hold over the subject and the fluency they have play a vital role not only in meetings and interviews but also when communicating with others on a regular basis. He stressed on the fact that people remember 7% of what we say, 38% of how we say it and 55% of the body language used. He made these sessions more interactive by providing the students with riddles, quizzes and more group activities which caught the attention of students easily.
In the last session, he significantly differentiated between a dream and a goal saying that a dream without any goals if of no value and unless people work towards setting goals, achieving their dreams seem quite impossible. Dr. Srimoy Patra helped the students by asking them to draw whatever came to their mind when they imagined themselves ten years later and asked them to keep the paper with them as a reminder to work for the goals set by them. The workshop concluded with a productive story told by him in which he highlighted how necessary it was for students to stop going with the flow and to come up with out of the box ideas to have a firm hold over their professional life.
Outcomes/Takeaways:
1. Professionalism from the very start: The session emphasized the importance of how a neat professional attire can play an important role in making a long-lasting impression. Confidence mixed with a proper attitude and a proficient use of words will take students a long way in their life.
2. Strategies for setting a proper goal: Dr. Srimoy Patra provided the students with certain techniques which would help them in the long run to set their goals and ultimately achieve what they had always wanted from life, one of which was writing them down and keeping that piece of paper in front of their eyes always.
3. Learning how to interpret gestures: The workshop stressed on the necessity of interpreting non verbal gestures and changes in the body language of the other person when communicating with them to understand them better and form a cordial relationship with them.
4. Productive interaction and doubt clarification: The last session concluded with a productive riddle followed by a question-answer session for the students to clarify their doubts regarding any point mentioned throughout the workshop so that they would carry with themselves some knowledge gained from this session, always.
These takeaways provided valuable guidance and made the students aware of their weaknesses and strengths as well as their emotional intelligence which is an important prospect of life. The students would become effective communicators and equip themselves with tools that would help them in career-readiness, confidence required for public speaking and academic success.
