The Career Related Workshop was held at CR-16, School of Communications. 4th Floor, with the theme: Workshop on Interview and Negotiation Skills on July 22, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, The Objectives is to help the students gain insights of the hiring and recruitment process among various industries and preparing them for upcoming professional interviews. The workshop was divided into two sessions. In the first half, the guest speaker, Mr. Bir Bikram Murmu, shared his personal experiences in the industry and elaborated on various aspects of the interview process. He highlighted the importance of non-verbal communication, including gestures, greetings, and behavior, and how these factors influence a andidate’s chances of being selected. Mr. Murmu also emphasized the key qualities employers look for in potential candidates and provided practical tips on handling different interview scenarios. He discussed strategies to manage stress and maintain composure during interviews. The session was highly interactive, as Mr. Murmu engaged with the students, encouraging them to share their perspectives and challenges related to interviews and other stressful situations. The second half of the session started with the Dean Professor V.Vijay Kumar facilitating the guest peaker followed by a short interactive session between the guest speaker and the Dean. The primary theme of the second session was “Negotiating” during the interview wherein Mr. Murmu talked about different negotiating skills that students can use based on their industry experience and exposure. Mr. Murmu also emphaseized on being careful and smart while negotiating with the recruiter. He shared various tips on how one can negotiate with the employer and attain desirable goals for his/ her own benefit. Overall, the workshop was interesting, informative and insightful. The students got to learn new techniques about interviews which regained confidence in them, thereby preparing them for a professional setting. Outcomes/Takeaways:
1. Importance of Interview and Negotiation Skills: Mr. BB Murmu spoke about various skills one could acquire before sitting for an interview. He emphasized on doing one’s own market research, study about the company, its clients, the work culture and its stakeholders before attempting to apply to the company. He also talked about various smart and insightful negotiating skills one could incur for a successful career prospective.
2. Lucrative Creer Opportunities: During the workshop, Mr. Murmu talked about the various career opportunities a student of communication has in this dynamic world. This not only gave students an insight of the industry but also encouraged them in pursuing a career that they want to choose.
3. Understanding the competitive landscape: The guest speaker also talked about the importance of “standing out” in the market as the interviewer reviews thousands of applications for a single job position. He advised to carefully go through and review the job description and preparing answers relevant to the job one has applied for. Mr. Murmu has also encouraged students to work on their uniqueness which would make them distinct from other candidates who have applied for the similar job role.
