The School of Communications, Organised a ACADEMIC INDUSTRY INTERFACE TALK-1, on the Theme: Journalism today- Opportunities and Challenges on 19.08.2024, Monday at 10:45 AM to 12:45PM in Seminar Hall-2, Ground Floor, Old Academic Block, XIM University New Campus. The Resource person: Mr. Sougata Mukhopadhyay, Chief Bureau- West Bengal Press Trust Of India. Faculty Coordinator: Dr. Arpita Saha, Coordinator of Career Advisory Services, School of Communications. Objective: To help student know the depth of journalism and career in it. The speaker, himself made it a highly interactive session rather than a one-sided talk and therefore made the platform informative and free for the attendees. Besides talking on what journalism is, he strongly focused on how the journalist speaks “truth to power”. He threw light on the basic concept of ‘truth’ and discussed about various point of views on truth.
The session came to an end with his bundle of experiences which he unfolded, as a whole giving a proper and clear idea of a life of a journalist. He even highlighted the RG Kar incident of 9 Aug 2024 to provide us with examples of various concepts. The two-hour session enriched the thought of the audience and provided valuable insights to the world yet to be explored by students. The session ended with the vote of thanks by the anchor.

1. “What is truth?”: Repeatedly hearing about truth, students came to a point how to nurture their journalistic thinking, social mindset, and ability to question things.
2. “Real Eyes Realise Real Lies”: It was realised that in order to be clear about ‘the truth’, how important it is to check and recheck every information received.
3. Choosing the path of Journalism: As it was cleared, students came across a lot of thoughts why to choose journalism as their career.
Overall, the session cleared the doubts and reconstructed many old thoughts students were having on this topic.
